Rei Kawakubo

Rei Kawakubo info-

Born in Tokyo 1942, Rei Kawakubo is a Japanese fashion designer, the founder of Comme des Garcons (French for “Like boys”). During the 1980s Kawakubo’s style worked with primary dark tints and shades like black, dark grey and white. The materials she used often seemed frayed and unfinished around the edges, as well as holes and general asymmetrical shapes in the clothing. Her debut at the Paris fashion show caused uproar as she challenged notions of beauty, journalists calling her style “Hiroshima chic”.

However since the 1980’s Kawakubo has expanded her colour choice and works with both bright and dark colors. Her designs in Commes des Garcons follow her changing trend including a mix of dark and bright colors, whimsically placed upsidedown pockets, de-emphasized shoulders and long sleeves.

Kawakubo doesn’t just focus on cloths and accessories; she also is involved greatly in graphic design, advertising and shop interiors. She believes all these mediums are inextricably linked and are part of one vision.
